A little bit of manicure history

Amazing, even such everyday procedure like manicure has own history. Manicure fashions evolved since ancient times. In 3000 B.C. Egypt and China manicure was already popular. In ancient Egypt, for instance, various nail paint colors were used as “Estates’ code”. Bright and deep colors indicated the attachment to royal family, pointed out the high society status, slaves could color nails in pale and dull tones. Cleopatra painted her long nails in terracotta color with the help of usual henna.    

In ancient cultures, long nails were symbolizing wisdom and way of communicating with gods, thus not only women were allowed to have them. Men were to fulfill a number of special requirements – being a part of nobility was one of crucial ones. In ancient Rus there were a lot of nail related superstitions. For instance, old-timers of some remote villages still believe and try to convince others that the only favorable day for nail cut is Thursday. The nail paint in ancient China, for example, was made from yolks, gelatin and gum arabic.  600 years ago Chinese prefer to colour nails with golden and silver paint. During Min dynasty times, nails were coloured with black and red paint, and fingers were covered with long nail shape caps (made from gold or silver). The first colour nail polish originated in USA in 1932, gave start to rapid development of nail industry worldwide. The “manicure” term derives from Latin “manus” – for hand and “cura” – for care, the hygienic treatment aimed for hand skin disease prevention also intended for nail grooming.

 About pedicure

 Healthy and well-groomed nail is the one of the important components of overall health. Not only for women, but for men - as well. Apart from nail colouring and shaping, pedicure is a system of foot and leg treatments. Regular pedicure allows to maintain good healthy condition of nails, finger and foot skin.
